Nuclear arsenals are being modernized and, in some cases, expanded,” said Izumi Nakamitsu, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, speaking on behalf of Secretary-General António Guterres at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony.The 6 August 1945 bombing of Hiroshima by the United States, killed tens of thousands of people, many of whom succumbed to their injuries in subsequent months. Our study suggests that human-induced global warming of 2°C may trigger other Earth system processes, often called 'feedbacks,' that can drive further warming -- even if we stop emitting greenhouse gases," lead author Will Steffen of the Australian National University saidHotter temperatures could result in sea level rise up to 60 meters (32 to 197 ft) from today's shorelines, swamping coastal populations and forcing communities inland.
